[Chicago] Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab
Florida Stone Crab is a crab found in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The bodies of these crabs are relatively small and rarely eaten. In comparison, the claws are large and unequally-sized. The black-tipped stone crab claws are considered a delicacy. The claws are hand harvested, one claw at a time, and thrown back to the sea.
Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab is famous for its fresh stone crabs and I was super excited to try this new seafood.
We actually arrived at Joe’s three hours late because I remembered our reservation time wrong. The restaurant was busy but luckily, they gave us a table right away and still granted me my dining points on OpenTable.
We started the meal with the stone crab bisque. The bisque was smooth, rich, creamy, and full of crab sweetness. There were bits of crab meat floating in the bisque as well. It was so good that it was challenging not to lick the bowl! :p
I ordered 7 medium stone crabs for myself as my main. The stone crab claws were quite large! The shells were very hard but came pre-cracked. I did not really need any of the horseradish mayo for the crabs. The crabmeat tasted so sweet and delicate.
Charles and I shared some sauteed garlic spinach. The spinach tasted good but nothing extraordinary.
Joe’s is also famous for their prime steak. Charles ordered the bone-in rib-eye for himself. The rib-eye was seasoned well but just a bit overcooked for our medium rare. It had a rich, on-the-bone flavour but did not have the melt-in-your-mouth tenderness we were expecting. It was still pretty juicy though.
We ended our meal with half a slice of the havana dream pie and half a slice of the key lime pie. The havana dream pie was to die for. Creamy silky custard, fluffy crumbly sweet cake, topped with some whipped cream and strawberries, each bite was heavenly!
The key lime pie was also excellent. I am a huge fan of citrusy desserts and this key lime pie was a great way to end a meal without being overly sweet and heavy. The smooth tangy custard key lime filling with buttery graham cracker crust tasted amazing together. I could have eaten a full slice by myself!
Our dinner at Joe’s was lovely. The stone crabs were so fresh and sweet. The rich creamy bisque was one of the best I’ve had. Even though the steak was not the greatest, the desserts were absolutely divine. The atmosphere of the dining room was lively and inviting. The waiters were so courteous and knowledgeable. We would definitely revisit this place should we return to Chicago!
